After making sure that the you and your family are safe, and photographing damages, it is important to make temporary hurricane damage repairs to your property that will prevent further damage to your property. These repairs do not have to be perfect but should offer protection from additional rain and wind that your home may face before permanent repairs are made to your home. This may include placing tarps on your roof in addition to any other measures you may be able to take in order to prevent further damage to your property. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers does offer a program, Operation Blue Roof, that will put blue tarp roofs on homes that have sustained hurricane damage, free of charge; however, this program may be limited to certain areas or zip codes that are have been designated as having been hardest hit. For more information visit the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website or call 1-888-ROOF-BLU. It is important to remember to keep all receipts associated with temporary hurricane damage repairs that you make, as you will need to be able to produce these receipts in order to be compensated for these expenses in your hurricane insurance claim.
